11th edition of the Nice Classification came into force

January 16, 2017

New edition of The International Classification of Goods and Services that was established by the Nice Agreement concluded on June 15, 1957 came into force on January 1, 2017.

The 11th edition has a number of changes if compared with the previous edition, namely some products have been transferred from one class to another, besides the majority of classes contain a number of new terms.

Among the most numerous products that have been regrouped in the 11th classification the following can be mentioned:

  • products of personal care and hygiene products with medical or veterinary purposes are excluded from class 3 and transferred to class 5 intended for such purposes as medical shampoos, medical soaps, hair and dental care medical products, medical animal detergents and shampoos, etc.;
  • kitchen accessories, such as Apple corers, Butter curlers, carving and barbecue forks, Cherry pitters, Fish and rice scoops, fish slices, Fruit muddlers, bread, meat, ice and vegetable tongs, serving forks, ladles, spoons, and many others were excluded from class 8 and transferred to class 21;
  • sleeping bags from the 20th class were moved to the 24th;
  • almond milk, Peanut milk beverages and for culinary purposes were transferred from class 32 to class 29, besides this class was supplemented by milk substitutes, coconut milk, coconut milk for culinary purposes, coconut milk-based beverages and rice milk for culinary purposes.

It is also worth mentioning that there is no need to re-classify registered trademarks or trademark applications with the filing date prior to January 1, 2017.
