Importance of patent translation
Patent translation is a critical part of filing a patent application abroad. In most jurisdictions, a foreign patent office requires the application to be submitted in its official language. Accurate patent translation helps preserve the meaning of the invention and ensures that the patent claims, description, and abstract are presented as intended for examination and future enforcement.
The quality of patent translation can directly affect the outcome of patent examination. If patent claims or technical terminology are translated incorrectly, the invention may be interpreted differently by the patent examiner. For this reason, applicants typically rely on professional patent translation services or qualified patent attorneys working with specialized technical translators.
Common issues with patent translation
Many patent translation providers face challenges when dealing with highly technical patent documentation. Common issues in patent translation include:
- lack of specialists with sufficient technical background to understand the subject matter of patent applications
- limited familiarity with standard structures and templates used in patent documentation
- insufficient linguistic expertise required for precise translation of complex technical texts
Risks of poor translation
Choosing an inexperienced translator for a patent application may lead to several serious risks, including:
- numerous office actions during substantive examination
- additional time and costs during the patent prosecution process
- negative impact on the patentability of the invention
- inaccurate representation of the invention’s subject matter
- complications in potential court proceedings
- in some cases, the inability to obtain patent protection
For these reasons, patent translations must be prepared with particular care. Accurate translation of patent applications requires both technical expertise in the relevant field and a solid understanding of patent terminology. Professional patent translators ensure that the translated text remains consistent with the original application and meets the requirements of foreign patent offices.

COMPUTER-ASSISTED TRANSLATION (CAT) TOOLS USED IN PATENT TRANSLATION
Computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools help ensure consistency and efficiency in patent translation projects. At MSP, we use professional translation software such as RWS Trados Studio to manage terminology, maintain translation memory, and improve the accuracy of technical and legal texts.
Terminology is carefully maintained according to clients’ glossaries and previous translations. Global terminology consistency is also ensured and verified using built-in software filters. Translation of similar segments is simplified and accelerated through synchronization with the translation memory database, resulting in significant cost savings for patent family translations.
RWS Trados Studio
RWS Trados Studio is a professional CAT tool used to maintain terminology consistency, manage translation memory, and support efficient processing of technical documentation. It can also import files from other CAT tools such as Wordfast and MemoQ for processing.
Fields of expertise
Accurate patent translation requires both linguistic expertise and a strong understanding of the relevant technical field. For this reason, each our patent translation project is assigned to a translator with specialized education and professional experience in the corresponding area of technology.
After the initial translation is completed, the text undergoes professional proofreading to verify consistency with the original patent application and to ensure that technical terminology and patent claims are reproduced correctly. This two-step process helps minimize the risk of translation errors that could affect the validity or interpretation of the patent.
Our translators have experience working with patent documentation across a wide range of technical industries, including:
Engineering & Technology
Life Sciences
Chemistry & Materials
Electronics & Physics
