Customs register in Uzbekistan - 9 months of operation

On April 22, 2016, the new Customs Code of Uzbekistan establishing inter-alia the Customs Register of IP objects came into force. During the first 9 months of the Customs Register's operation over 70 trademarks were recorded therein. The majority of the trademarks are registered in respect of the alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and pharmaceutical products. At the moment customs registration has been applied by right holders from over 15 countries, most of whom are residents of Uzbekistan, the United Kingdom, France, Benelux, and Austria.

The current statistics demonstrate domestic and foreign right holders' interest in customs protection measures and development of this direction of IP enforcement, so, the option has a potential for becoming an effective tool of IP protection in Uzbekistan.
