On November 12, 2025, the Parliament of Georgia adopted in the third reading the Draft Law ‘On Making Amendments to the Law of Georgia “On Design”’, initiated by the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia - Sakpatenti.

The new law introduces several important changes that make the design registration procedure more transparent and flexible. In particular, the re-examination mechanism will enable parties to challenge a registered design through an administrative process rather than judicial proceedings, significantly reducing the time and costs associated with dispute resolution. The powers of the Sakpatenti Appeals Chamber are also expanded, increasing the efficiency of administrative dispute handling. In addition, a new preliminary search service is introduced, enabling applicants to verify whether an identical design is already registered in Georgia before filing an application.

The development of the design protection system is a key factor in promoting innovation, fair competition, and economic growth. The adopted amendments will contribute to the establishment of a transparent, efficient, and EU-harmonized legal framework for design protection in Georgia.
