The Republic of Moldova is set to become the 40th contracting state of the European Patent Organisation on 1 June 2026. This follows the country’s deposit of its instrument of accession to the European Patent Convention on 25 March 2026, in accordance with Article 169(2) EPC, thereby completing the formal procedure for joining the European patent system.

Moldova’s accession represents a significant advancement in its integration into the European intellectual property framework. As a contracting state, Moldova will allow applicants to obtain patent protection through a single European patent application, eliminating the need for separate national filings. This will simplify procedures, reduce costs, and enhance legal certainty for patent holders, while also fostering innovation, facilitating technology transfer, and strengthening the country’s attractiveness for international investors.
