Eurasian Trademarks: Russia ratifies the EAEU Treaty

The State Duma of the Russian Federation has ratified the Treaty on Trademarks, Service Marks and Appellations of Origin of Goods of the Eurasian Economic Union.

The Treaty will enter into force after all EAEU member states have completed the necessary domestic procedures and provide the written notifications to the depositary.

After the Treaty comes into force, it will be possible to submit a single application for registration of a trademark or appellation of origin in order to obtain protection in Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia.

Rospatent notes that the ratification of the Treaty contributes to the Eurasian integration and the reduction of costs for ensuring the legal protection of intellectual property rights. The latter can be achieved due to the fact that the fees for filing an application for registration in the EAEU are paid at a lower amount compared to filing under the national procedure. In this case, the applicant can file an application to any of the EAEU states PTOs.
